The Wooden Shield is exactly that: a rough-hewn plank of oak or pine, bound with a single strip of leather and a crude iron rivet at the center. It is not forged in a smithy so much as lashed together by a desperate farmer or a rookie mercenary who needs *something* between their face and the next goblin swing. Merchants in the village of Torchlight stock a few of these alongside basic swords and cloth armor, selling them at a modest price to newcomers who cannot yet afford iron. They are also frequently found on the ground in the earliest dungeon encounters—abandoned by fallen soldiers, half-buried in dirt at the edge of a camp, or propped against a wall in a ruined watchtower.
