Rogue
Strike from the shadows, poison the blade, vanish before the counter.
The Rogue is one of three core playable character classes in the Torchlight action-RPG franchise, first appearing in the original Torchlight (2009) and carried forward through Torchlight II (2012) and Torchlight III (2023). It is a high-mobility, burst-damage class that fights with dual-wielded daggers at close range and a bow at distance, rewarding players who excel at positioning, timing, and managing short cooldown windows.
Where the Warrior leans into sustained melee pressure and the Elementalist channels area-of-effect magic, the Rogue is built around precision: a well-timed backstab, a poisoned blade that bleeds an enemy over time, and the ability to disengage before a counter-attack lands. It is the class for players who prefer to control the tempo of a fight rather than simply outlasting it.

Lore & Background
In the world of Torchlight, the great Flame burns in the heart of the land, holding back the encroaching dark. Most heroes who venture into the caverns and ruins that ring the Flame are straightforward: a Warrior with a shield, an Elementalist wreathed in fire and frost. The Rogue is something else entirely. They are the ones who slip through the gaps in a guard's formation, who pick the lock on a sealed vault while the rest of the party holds the corridor, who let a poison-soaked dagger do the slow, inevitable work while they are already three rooms away.
The Rogue's philosophy in the Torchlight setting is one of efficiency over endurance. There is no glory in a long, grinding fight when a single well-placed strike from the right angle can end it. This is reflected in the class's design: its best tools are short-duration, high-impact abilities that demand the player to be in the correct position at the correct moment. Miss the window and the Rogue is simply a person with a small knife and a bow, vulnerable to the very enemies they are trying to outmaneuver.
Across the three mainline games the Rogue's exact toolkit has shifted, but the core identity has remained consistent: speed, poison, backstab, and the constant tension between committing to a kill and preserving the option to run.
In Their Own Story
The corridor smelled of wet stone and old blood. Kael pressed his back against the wall, letting the heavy-footed wraith drift past, its tattered cloak brushing the torchlight into long, stuttering shadows. Three more behind it. He counted the gap between their swings—two, three, two, three—and let his fingers find the bowstring.
An arrow thudded into the second wraith's chest. It turned, groaning, and the rhythm broke. That was all he needed.
He was through the gap before the first wraith finished its turn, daggers out, the backstab window open like a mouth. Two quick slashes, the poison already working, a shadow-step that put him on the far side of the room. The wraiths were still turning when the poison finished the job, and Kael was already reloading, already watching the next corridor, already gone.
Reader's Guide
So you want to play Rogue. Here's the short version: you are the best class in the game at killing a single target very fast, and the worst at standing still in a crowd. Everything about your kit rewards being behind your enemy, not in front of them.
Start by learning your backstab. In every Torchlight game, attacking from behind a target deals significantly more damage. That is not a bonus; that is the class. If you are fighting a boss head-on, you are playing Warrior with a smaller knife. Use your mobility—dash, step, whatever the current game calls it—to get behind targets, pop your backstab, and reposition before they turn.
Poison is your real damage-over-time tool. Apply it early in a fight, especially against tanky enemies, and let it tick while you kite or reposition. Do not waste your best burst abilities on an enemy that is already dying.
Common pitfall: locking into a melee combo and forgetting you have a bow. If a group of enemies closes in, switch to ranged, backpedal, and let your poison finish them. The Rogue who stands still is the Rogue who dies.
Interactions: your pet (in Torchlight II and III) can taunt or distract, giving you the opening you need to slip behind a target. Use it. Synergize with any crowd-control from your support or your own utility to set up backstabs on stunned or slowed enemies.
Did You Know?
- The Rogue is one of only three character classes available in every mainline Torchlight game (Torchlight, Torchlight II, and Torchlight III), alongside the Warrior and the Elementalist.
- The Rogue is the only class in the franchise designed to fight effectively at both melee and ranged distances, using daggers up close and a bow at range.
- The backstab mechanic—dealing bonus damage when striking a target from behind—has been a defining Rogue ability across the series, making positioning as important as raw stats.
- Torchlight III (2023) was developed by EA rather than Runic Games, which created the original Torchlight and Torchlight II, yet the Rogue remained one of the three core classes.
