Engineer
Wrench in hand, turrets deployed, and the whole dungeon is about to get very loud.
The Engineer is one of the four playable hero classes in Torchlight, the 2009 hack-and-slash action RPG developed by Runic Games. Where the other classes lean on raw melee, elemental magic, or ranged precision, the Engineer brings mechanical ingenuity to the fight: deploying turrets, lobbing grenades, and buffing their own output with overcharged gadgetry. The class wields a heavy wrench and fills a hybrid support-and-damage role, making them a favorite for players who like a hands-on, tinkering feel in a fantasy world of lanterns and monsters.

Lore & Background
In the Torchlight world, where ancient caverns hide forgotten relics and the ever-burning Lantern keeps the darkness at bay, not every hero wields a sword or a staff. The Engineer is the tinkerer, the one who saw a rusted gear in a ruin and thought, 'I could make that shoot.' Their craft sits at the intersection of the world's old alchemical traditions and a grittier, more mechanical sensibility—bolts, springs, and volatile compounds where other heroes would simply swing harder or cast a fireball.
Among the other adventurers who descend into the depths, the Engineer is the one who sets up a defensive turret at the cave entrance, mutters about calibrating the fuse on a grenade, and then walks in with a wrench ready to crack a goblin's skull. They are not the most magically gifted, nor the most physically imposing, but they arrive to a fight already prepared, and they leave behind a small army of iron and fire that keeps shooting long after the battle is over.
The Torchlight world is one of cozy fantasy—warm taverns, a talking cat companion, a lantern that hums with soft light—and the Engineer fits into that tone as the practical, slightly gruff companion who fixes the bridge, patches the armor, and makes sure nobody dies because someone forgot to bring a spare wrench.
In Their Own Story
The tunnel smelled of wet stone and old oil. Kael set the turret down on a flat ledge, gave the barrel a quick spin to check the pivot, and palmed the ignition cap. Somewhere deeper in the dark, something with too many legs was clicking its mandibles against the rock.
'Three of them,' she called back to the Pyromancer, who was already warming his palms. 'Maybe four. Turret's got a two-hundred-round buffer. Should hold.'
The first one rounded the corner and the turret coughed, spat, and started chewing through chitin. Kael didn't look up. She was already winding the wrench, feeling the spring load, listening to the second and third ones scatter to the flanks. A grenade, loosely in her off-hand, ticking.
'You good?' the Pyromancer asked, fire still licking his fingers.
Kael racked the turret's magazine, smiled, and said, 'I'm always good. That's the whole point of the wrench.'
Reader's Guide
The Engineer is a hero class in Torchlight, and honestly, they're the one for you if you want to feel like you're bringing a whole workshop into a dungeon. Your primary weapon is a wrench—melee, satisfying, and it hits like a small anvil. But the real fun is the gadget kit.
Your bread and butter is the Turret. You drop it, it shoots, it keeps shooting while you go do something reckless. Pair that with a Grenade for area control and you've got a little mobile fortress. The Overcharge buff is where the damage really kicks in—stack it, swing that wrench, and watch numbers go up. You also get a repair-style heal, which makes the Engineer the class that can keep a party alive without a dedicated healer.
In the Torchlight world, the Engineer fits the cozy-but-dangerous tone perfectly. You're not the chosen one with a glowing sword; you're the person who figured out how to make a gear shoot. The talking cat companion doesn't care. The tavern still has ale.
Community-wise, the Engineer has a reputation as the 'I prepared for this' class. People love the little moment of setting up a turret, hearing it clack to life, and then walking past it while it does its job. It's the closest Torchlight gets to a 'build your base' fantasy in a pure hack-and-slash game. If you like utility, tinkering, and the satisfaction of a well-placed gadget, the Engineer is your class.
Did You Know?
- The Engineer is one of four starting hero classes in Torchlight alongside the Warrior, Pyromancer, and Deadeye.
- The Engineer's primary weapon is a wrench, making them the only class whose identity is built around a tool rather than a traditional weapon.
- Runic Games, the studio behind Torchlight, was founded by former Blizzard North developers, and the Engineer's mechanical, gadget-heavy design reflects that hands-on, tinkerer spirit.
- The Engineer's turret ability lets the player deploy a self-firing defensive unit, effectively creating a small autonomous ally in a game that otherwise has no traditional party AI.
