Wraith Trolls

A hulking shadow where a troll should be, swinging fists that hit like falling boulders.

Wraith Trolls

Wraith Trolls are a formidable enemy type in the Torchlight action-RPG series, encountered as large, spectral troll variants that haunt the wilds and deeper dungeon areas. They represent a step up in threat from standard trolls, combining the brute physicality of their kin with an unsettling, ghostly presence that signals a more dangerous encounter.

As foes, Wraith Trolls serve as mid-to-late-game melee bruisers. They are not bosses in the traditional sense, but their size, health pool, and heavy attack patterns make them a memorable nuisance for players who underestimate them or get cornered in tight corridors.

Lore & Background

In the world of Torchlight, trolls are a well-known species of large, brutish humanoids found in forests, caves, and the open wilderness. They are not evil by design so much as they are simply enormous, slow-thinking creatures that view anything smaller than themselves as either a threat or a snack. Wraith Trolls appear to be a corrupted or spectral offshoot of this lineage—trolls whose physical form has been partially dissolved by some lingering magical residue, leaving them translucent, cold to the touch, and far more aggressive than their living counterparts.

Players who have wandered deep into the overworld or braved the lower dungeon floors will recognize the telltale shimmer of a Wraith Troll: a broad-shouldered silhouette that flickers at the edges, eyes glowing with a pale inner light, and a roar that sounds less like a living growl and more like wind forced through a cracked skull. They do not appear in the starting areas; by the time one encounters them, the player has typically progressed far enough in gear to survive the exchange, though a careless moment still ends in a very undignified death screen.

The Torchlight world has no single grand narrative explaining why trolls become wraiths. The games favor environmental storytelling and light lore drops over encyclopedic exposition, so the Wraith Troll's origin remains a texture rather than a plot point—part of the natural ecosystem of dangerous things that live where the light does not reach.

In Their Own Story

The torch sputtered. Kael had been in the grotto for an hour, looting the half-collapsed shrine, when the air ahead turned the color of old bruises. Two shapes materialized from the dark—not walking, not emerging, simply *there*, as if the cave had always held them and only now decided to be seen. The larger one tilted its head, jaw working soundlessly, and the faint blue light in its eye sockets pulsed once. Kael's hands were already on the hilt. The troll's fist came down like a closing door, and the stone floor cracked where it landed. There was no negotiation. There was only the next three seconds, and whether Kael moved fast enough to be alive in them.

Reader's Guide

Wraith Trolls are a foe, not a hero or pet—you will be fighting them, not playing as them. They slot into the mid-to-late-game enemy tier, typically appearing after you've cleared out the smaller goblin and skeleton packs and started feeling a little too comfortable.

Their kit is straightforward but punishing: a heavy overhead swing with a long wind-up, a lower grab that can yank you off your feet, and a follow-up slam. The wind-up is your window. Kite them in open areas, break their combo with a dodge or a well-timed block, and punish the recovery. In tight dungeon corridors they are significantly more dangerous because the grab attack becomes nearly unavoidable.

They fit the Torchlight world as a natural escalation of the troll enemy family. Where a standard troll is a big, slow, somewhat predictable melee threat, the Wraith variant adds that spectral shimmer and a slightly faster attack cadence, reminding you that the world has teeth at every depth.

Community favorites tend to be the moments where a Wraith Troll's grab whiffs and it stumbles into a wall, or the rare spawn where two of them aggro simultaneously and you have to juggle them while your health bar does its best impression of a seismograph. Not a meme in the viral sense, but the kind of "oh, you again" grunt every Torchlight player knows well.
