Spiders

Small, fast, and never alone — Torchlight's first lesson in why numbers matter.

Spiders

Spiders are a recurring class of small, fast melee enemies in the Torchlight action-RPG series. They serve as one of the first foes players encounter, typically populating the early dungeon and overworld areas where the hero is still building out their gear and skill loadout.

Individually a spider is a minor threat, but they almost always appear in loose clusters or swarms, making them a reliable introduction to the series' pacing: move, kite, and use an area-of-effect ability before the little things pile on.

Lore & Background

In the world of Torchlight, spiders are unremarkable denizens of the dark places beneath the surface: damp caverns, overgrown ruins, and the underbellies of old structures where light rarely reaches. They are not bound to any faction or cursed by any ancient rite; they are simply part of the ecosystem that fills the gaps between the grand conflicts of heroes and warlords. A spider's only ambition is to eat, and a hero's boots make a very loud, very snackable sound on stone.

Because they breed quickly and hunt in loose packs, a single spider sighting often means a dozen more are waiting just out of sight. Players who linger too long in an early corridor will learn, to their mild annoyance, that the little red eyes multiplying in the gloom are not a graphical glitch but a tactical reality. The spiders do not hold grudges, do not coordinate beyond basic proximity, and do not monologue. They simply close distance and bite, over and over, until the hero moves on or the cluster falls.

In the broader Torchlight setting, spiders occupy the same narrative niche as rats in a medieval tavern: not a story unto themselves, but an ambient reminder that the world is full of small, persistent things that will absolutely get under your armor if you stop paying attention.

In Their Own Story

The torch sputters, throwing long amber shadows across the flagstones. You round the corner expecting an empty corridor, a breather between rooms, and instead the ceiling is moving. Dozens of them, legs clicking in a soft, wet rhythm, dropping one by one onto the stone with a faint *tick-tick-tick*. They scatter in a loose ring, mandibles clicking, eyes catching the torchlight like scattered embers. You back up, raise your staff, and feel the familiar, almost fond irritation of a player who just wanted to loot a chest in peace. The nearest spider lunges. You swing. It splits. The others close in. The corridor smells of dust and old silk, and somewhere behind you the rest of the pack is already picking its way down the next archway, patient as the dark itself.

Reader's Guide

Spiders are a foe, not a hero or pet, so your job is to deal with them rather than build around them. Their kit is essentially: fast approach, low individual HP, and a tendency to spawn in groups of five to ten or more. They hit for a modest amount of melee damage and have no ranged attack, no special ability, and no enrage timer. The danger is purely arithmetic — ten spiders hitting you in quick succession is very different from one.

In practice, spiders slot into the earliest stretch of a Torchlight run. You'll meet them while your character is still at low level, with a basic weapon and maybe one or two skills. The community's go-to advice is the same it's always been: don't let them surround you. A single area-of-effect swing, a fire nova, a well-placed ground skill — anything that hits in a radius — turns a swarm into a brief, satisfying cleanup. Kiting works too, but it's tedious and the little things are annoyingly quick.

Fans tend to remember spiders less for their threat and more for the comedy of being swarmed by what is essentially the game's equivalent of houseflies. There's a long-running bit in player communities about "spider tax" — the small, unavoidable HP loss you take just for existing in the same room as them. They're the tutorial's way of saying: the world is alive, it's a little bit hostile, and it does not care that you just started.
