Mages

Fragile body, apocalyptic spells — the Mage turns every dungeon into a pyrotechnics show.

Mages

The Mage is one of the three core starting classes in the Torchlight franchise, a ranged spellcaster who channels raw elemental power to devastate foes from a safe distance. Where the Barbarian wields brute force and the Ranger relies on precision arrows, the Mage turns the battlefield into a storm of fire, frost, and lightning, trading personal durability for overwhelming magical damage.

Across both Torchlight (2009) and Torchlight II (2012), the Mage occupies the classic 'glass cannon' niche: fragile up close, but capable of wiping out entire packs of enemies with a single well-placed area spell. The class has become a fan-favorite for players who prefer watching the world explode in colorful elemental bursts rather than wading in with a sword.

Lore & Background

In the world of Torchlight, magic is not a rare, hoarded secret but a living force woven into the land itself. Mages are those who learned to listen to that force and give it shape—pulling heat from the earth, freezing the air into killing shards, or pulling lightning down from clouds that never existed. They are not necessarily the most respected figures in a village; a farmer will trust a sturdy Barbarian to guard the granary, but he will also quietly hope the local Mage stays out of the cellar, because the last time one sneezed, the wine barrels detonated.

The Mage's tradition values knowledge and distance. A well-trained Mage rarely needs to be within arm's reach of a goblin. Instead, they study the geometry of a room, the clustering of enemies, the moment when a single Frost Nova or a sweeping Fireball will turn a desperate fight into a one-sided cleanup. Their weakness is well known: get a Mage cornered with no mana and no escape, and they are as vulnerable as any unarmored civilian. This vulnerability is, in the lore, the price of wielding forces that would unmake a lesser mind.

In Torchlight II, the tradition deepens with the addition of the Familiar—a small, loyal creature that bonds to the Mage and follows them into the depths. It is not a warrior in the traditional sense, but a companion that reflects the Mage's connection to the living magical currents of the world, a reminder that even the most volatile spellcaster still needs something small and warm at their side.

In Their Own Story

The corridor stank of wet stone and old blood. Kael pressed his back against the wall, feeling the familiar hum of mana cycling through his veins like a second heartbeat. Three goblins. Maybe four. The torchlight flickered, painting their snarling faces in amber.

He didn't draw a weapon. He never did.

His fingers traced the air, and the temperature in the corridor dropped ten degrees in a single breath. Frost crept up the stone in crystalline veins. The lead goblin hissed, scrambling backward. Kael let it scramble. Let them cluster in the narrow passage.

Then he exhaled, and the air in front of him turned white.

The Nova hit. Ice shattered outward in a perfect ring, and the goblins simply… stopped. Frozen mid-lunge, mid-snarle, their eyes wide and glassy. The corridor was silent except for the soft crack of ice settling.

Kael walked past them, boots crunching on the frozen floor, and pulled a small, warm Familiar from his cloak. It blinked up at him, chirping softly.

"Easy, little one," he murmured. "We're almost at the next room."

The Familiar purred against his chest, and they moved on into the dark.

Reader's Guide

The Mage is a hero class—the ranged, elemental spellcaster option available from the start in both Torchlight and Torchlight II. You pick it, you commit to the plan: stay back, throw big spells, and absolutely do not let a goblin get within sword range of your unarmored, mana-drained, slightly-panicking mage.

Your kit revolves around elemental area-of-effect damage. Fire spells burn, frost spells slow and shatter, lightning spells arc and chain. The satisfying part is the setup: you watch a pack of enemies bunch up in a corridor, you time your AoE, and suddenly the screen is a fireworks display while your health bar stays mostly intact. The risk is real, though. One surprise ambush, one mana drought, and you're the squishiest character in the party, desperately kiting a single wolf.

In Torchlight II the Familiar adds a small layer of charm and utility to an otherwise solo-feeling class. It follows you, it reacts to your spells, and honestly, it makes the Mage feel less lonely in the deep caves.

Community-wise, the Mage is the class people pick when they want to feel like a wizard in the most literal, over-the-top sense. Meme energy is high: screenshots of a single Fireball obliterating a screen full of enemies, the eternal 'I just need one more cast' loop, and the shared trauma of getting cornered with zero mana. If you like watching the world catch fire and then feeling a little guilty about it, this is your class.
