Frost Trolls
A glacier given legs, and it wants to freeze you mid-swing.
Frost Trolls are large, slow melee bruisers found in the Cragglands region of Torchlight (2009). They are a classic high-health, cold-damage enemy that punishes players who linger too long in the frozen mountain corridors, serving as a checkpoint-style threat that forces careful positioning and resource management.
As a staple foe of the Cragglands, Frost Trolls sit in the middle-to-late difficulty curve of that zone. Their frost damage and sheer bulk make them a memorable early-game boss-adjacent encounter for players running through the icy tunnels and caverns.

Lore & Background
The Cragglands of the Torchlight world are a region of jagged peaks, frozen tunnels, and ancient stone halls where the cold has seeped so deep into the rock that even the creatures dwelling there carry frost in their very bones. The Frost Trolls are among the most visible of these creatures—massive, hulking trolls whose skin is mottled with ice and whose breath hangs in the air like ground fog. They are not particularly quick, but their reach is long and their grip is crushing, and a single well-placed blow can leave a player shivering and slowed.
In the broader ecology of the Cragglands, Frost Trolls occupy the role of apex melee predator. Smaller cold-adapted creatures—frozen goblins, ice-skittering beasts—tend to avoid them, and the trolls patrol the wider caverns and tunnel mouths where the temperature drops. They are territorial and will charge at any intruder that crosses their path, though their slow turn rate means a nimble player can kite them around pillars and stalactites.
Their presence in the Cragglands reinforces the zone's identity as a place where the environment itself is a hazard. Frost damage from a Troll stacks with the ambient cold of the area, making the Cragglands one of the more punishing early zones in Torchlight for under-prepared adventurers.
In Their Own Story
The tunnel mouth gaped like a wound in the mountainside, and the air that breathed out of it tasted of iron and old snow. Kael pressed his back against the stone, watching the Frost Troll lumber out of the dark. It was enormous—easily twice his height—with fingers like frozen logs and eyes the pale blue of a glacial lake. It didn't roar. It didn't need to. The sound it made was the slow, grinding creak of ice shifting under pressure, and the ground beneath its feet cracked in a web of white fractures.
Kael raised his sword. The Troll raised its fist. And the Cragglands held its breath.
Reader's Guide
Frost Trolls are a foe, not a hero class or pet—they're the enemy you have to outsmart in the Cragglands.
Their kit is deceptively simple: slow approach, long reach, heavy cold-damage melee swing, and a health pool that makes them feel like a mini-boss even when they're not. They don't cast spells or summon adds in any meaningful way; the danger is the combo of their bulk, their frost damage, and the fact that they show up in groups of two or three in the wider caverns. One Troll is a nuisance. Three Trolls in a narrow tunnel is a genuine threat.
In the Torchlight world, they slot in as the Cragglands' signature melee threat, filling the same ecological niche that a dire wolf or a cave troll would in other fantasy settings. They're the reason the Cragglands feels cold and dangerous beyond just the ambient frost.
Community-wise, the classic meme is the "one more hit" moment: you're at 3 HP, the Troll is at 200, and you absolutely did not plan to be in this tunnel. Speed boosts, kiting around pillars, and pre-emptive crowd control (stuns, slows) are the bread-and-butter counter. Ranged builds find them easy to chip down from range; melee builds need to respect their wind-up and step out of the arc.
Did You Know?
- Frost Trolls are one of the few enemies in Torchlight whose damage type is explicitly cold, meaning fire-based gear and abilities hit them for bonus damage.
- Their slow movement speed makes them one of the more kitable enemies in the Cragglands, rewarding players who use the environment's pillars and narrow passages to their advantage.
- In Torchlight's design, the Cragglands escalates from smaller cold creatures to Frost Trolls as a natural difficulty ramp, making them a de facto zone gate for undergeared players.
- Frost Trolls share the general troll visual language of Torchlight 1—broad shoulders, long arms, and a hunched posture—but are distinguished by their ice-mottled skin and pale, glacial eye color.
